Why is this important?

Population measures provide insight on the changing size and face of communities. Changes in total population are a measure of the overall health of a community and its ability to attract and retain residents.

How does our county compare?

Since 2010, the overall population in Lancaster County has grown approximately 7.2%, notably higher than the state increase of 2% and a bit below the national rate. The City of Lancaster's population was stable until 2020, when it began to decline to 57,500, 3.1% below the level in 2010.

Lancaster had the third lowest growth rate since 2010 among comparison counties, outpacing Berks (4.6%) and York (6%). Cumberland had the highest growth rate at 14% followed by Chester at 9.4%. Lancaster County had the highest total population at 556,600 followed closely by Chester at 545,800. Lebanon had the smallest population at 144,000.
