Population measures provide insight on the changing size and face of communities. Changes in total population are a measure of the overall health of a community and its ability to attract and retain residents.
How does our county compare?
Since 2000, the overall population in Lancaster County has grown approximately 18%, notably higher than the state increase of 5.6% and similar to the national rate. The City of Lancaster's growth rate from 2000 increased steadily until about 2017 and has since slowed to 2% in 2021.
Lancaster had the third lowest growth rate since 2000 among comparison counties, outpacing Berks (15%) and Dauphin (14%). Chester had the highest growth rate at 24% followed by Cumberland at 23%. Lancaster County has the highest total population at 553,700 followed closely by Chester at 538,700. Lebanon had the smallest population at 143,500.
